Edgewood Locker Introduces Meat Cutting and Butcher Apprenticeship Program

The Edgewood Locker is pleased to announce a program that will provide education and workforce skills for Northeast Iowa residents. The Meat Cutter and Butcher Apprenticeship offered by the Edgewood Locker will allow for a combination of classroom learning and real-world, on-the-job training. At the Edgewood Locker, apprentices will be rotated through various work assignments to ensure that they will understand all aspects of meat production upon completion. Classroom training will take place at Hawkeye Community College. Students will attend 96 lecture hours and 66 lab hours at Hawkeye. Tuition costs will be 100% reimbursed by Edgewood Locker for students achieving suitable grades.

Upon completing on-the-job training and classroom training, students will receive a Certification of Completion of Apprenticeship Award. This is an official certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor. Qualifying graduates will then be offered full-time employment with competitive wages. Opportunities for advancement within the Edgewood Locker will also be available for these high performing apprenticeship graduates.

“We are excited to offer this tuition-paid program to folks interested in developing a career in the meat industry,” said Baili Maurer of Edgewood Locker. “The workforce needs people with these skills. Meat cutting is an important trade that is not only sought after at the Edgewood Locker but many meat businesses across the country.”

The Registered Apprenticeship program announced above is intended for seniors in high school and working-age adults. In addition to that program, The Edgewood Locker is excited to announce that we have partnered with West Delaware and Edgewood-Colesburg Community School Districts, Fareway Meat & Grocery in Manchester, and Off The Hoof Meats & Deli in Delhi to offer a Registered Quality Pre-Apprenticeship program to high school juniors and younger students interested in the Apprenticeship Program.

The Edgewood Locker would like to thank Donna Boss with Delaware County Economic Development, Elise Bergan with Edgewood Economic Development, West Delaware Community School District staff, and Edgewood-Colesburg Community School District staff for their partnership in the development of this program.

This program is available immediately, so if you or someone you know is interested in pursuing this program, please contact Baili at 563-928-6814 or baili@edgewoodlocker.com.
